Community Comments

We work with you.

A-FAN works with community members and planning commissions to answer questions and help them understand how modern, responsible livestock operations are planned, built and managed. Here are some comments from a few of the people we’ve worked with.

“We arrived at a swine operation and were amazed at the technology and how much it has advanced. There wasn’t a smell and flies didn’t come on the bus. It wasn’t at all what we expected – you couldn’t have told me about this, we had to experience it.

“A-FAN plays an extremely important role in educating people of the technology that helps these facilities be environmentally friendly. They demonstrate that producers take the best care of their livestock and try to be good neighbors. A-FAN not only helps young people trying to get started, but also serves as an educational unit for people on a planning commission.”

Willow Holoubek • Butler County Development. Holoubek participated in an A-FAN bus tour, giving her the opportunity to see – and smell – a modern swine operation.

“The producers incorporated a spray system that periodically sprays into the room where they kept small pigs. The spray helped the pigs breathe better and kept odors down. Even some people on the tour who were involved in farming were surprised at how clean and free of odor the facility was. The family did their homework and set up their operation in a proper manner.”

Ken Shriver • Stanton County Planning and Zoning Commission. Shriver participated in an A-FAN bus tour and had the opportunity to visit a modern, family-owned pork facility.
