Responsible livestock production: Helping communities meet challenges.

Challenges abound for many Nebraska communities. The costs of government services and education are on the rise. At the same time, tax receipts are shrinking. People are moving away. Businesses are struggling to survive.

Agriculture, but especially livestock and poultry production, can become a powerful economic development strategy for rural Nebraska communities. Livestock production makes good use of available resources, creates jobs, generates tax revenue and stimulates economic activity throughout a community.

By supporting the efforts of farmers to bring responsible livestock production to the area, communities and local governments can address a number of key issues in a proactive manner:

Increased tax revenue. A successful livestock operation generates a significant amount of tax revenue for schools and community services—hundreds of thousands of dollars over the long term. Better yet, livestock production does not require tax incentives or government investment in expensive infrastructure that other industries may expect or demand.

Good-paying jobs. The economic activity generated by livestock production creates jobs, not only on the farm but throughout the entire community—including entrepreneurial opportunities that can help keep young people in the area.

Greater economic vitality. Livestock production puts money in the local bank, the grocery store, the feed supply store, the gas station, the car dealer and other main street businesses. Employees spend their paychecks in town—and their children attend local schools.

Retaining existing businesses. Adding or expanding a livestock operation can help local farmers and other business owners keep their businesses viable and profitable. This enhances the future for the next generation of farm families and local business owners in the community.
